Iranian officials ordered to strictly enforce hijab

The head of Tehran City Council said yesterday that officials must not stand in the way of morality police and their street-level enforcement of the Islamic dress code, hijab.

The Iranian Student News Agency (ISNA) reports that Hassan Noroozi has called on all officials to cooperate in reinforcing mass adherence to hijab regulations.

Last month, Tehran Governor Morteza Tamaddon took a more moderate approach, saying current adherence to hijab in the city is acceptable. “The best option is to encourage people to use hijab and modest clothing of their own volition.” The governor also urged an end to overzealous enforcement on the street.

But yesterday the the City Council head insisted all officials must unite in an effort to confront public violation of hijab. He added that cabinet, Parliament, the judiciary and all related government officials must have “a unified view” on this issue. He also recommended that university classes be split by gender to help reinforce hijab standards. He said that when students enter co-ed universities after years of separate schools, “we see a negative effect on the issue of hijab and modesty.”

Fars News Agency reports that the head of Iranian Security Forces has announced that violation of hijab will be firmly challenged by his officers and morality police all across Iran.
