Iran’s Press TV reports this morning that Iran has refuted US allegations of Tehran’s interference in internal affairs of other states, stressing that certain countries are taking politically-motivated stance against the Islamic Republic.

On Friday, US President Barack Obama claimed that the Syrian government is seeking Iran’s aid in dealing with the Syrian protests, saying, “Instead of listening to their own people, (Syrian) President Bashar Assad is blaming outsiders while seeking Iranian assistance in repressing Syria’s citizens through the same brutal tactics that have been used by his Iranian allies.”

Speaking to Iran’s Arabic-language news channel Al-Alam on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said, “We do not accept claims about Iran’s meddling with affairs of countries like Syria and reject them. We believe that such a stand comes from a political stance.”

He added that Iran’s foreign policy is based on non-interference in the internal affairs of countries, stressing that the Islamic Republic respects territorial integrity of states and their public demands. Mehmanparast emphasized that Syrian officials are prudent and have the capability of managing their country’s internal affairs.

He condemned brutal crackdowns against protesters and military interference of foreign powers in the affairs of regional countries and said Iran believes in an approach which will meet the legal demands of the people.

Protests demanding governmental reform have been held in several Syrian cities over the past weeks. Dozens of people have been killed during the protests. The opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings. The Syrian government, however, refutes the accusation and puts the blame on armed gangs and agitators backed by foreign powers — especially Israel — for the unrest.
