An Iranian man who set himself on fire in Amsterdam yesterday has died of his injuries.

The unidentified 36-year-old was aflame for more than two minutes, and all efforts by passers-by to douse the fire were unsuccessful, until emergency personnel transferred him to the hospital.

His reported motive for the self-immolation was the Dutch government’s denial of his plea for asylum.

The event occurred on Wednesday at 12:30 PM in a central Amsterdam square, and the severity of his injuries claimed his life this morning.

According to Associated Press, the Dutch government has tightened restrictions on immigration over the past decade due to the growth of anti-Muslim sentiments.
