Mousavi’s father passes away in Tehran
30 Mar 2011
Mir Esmail Mousavi, the father of Iranian opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi, died today in Tehran at the age of 103, Kaleme webiste reports.
He was a cousin of Seyed Javad Khamenei, the father of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Aki Khamenei.
Mir-Hossein Mousavi and his wife, Zahra Rahnavard, have been under house arrest since February 14 and cut off from any outside contact, even with their family. Some state media reported that Mousavi recently was allowed to visit his ailing father, but opposition websites reject that. A letter published by the Mousavi children indicates that their grandfather’s dying wish to see his son was not realized.
There is no information available about a funeral for Mir Esmail Mousavi. Over the past two years, since the post-election protests of 2009, Iranian authorities have often imposed strict security upon such ceremonies.
Opposition leaders Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi have been under house arrest along with their wives since they called for a solidarity march on February 14 in support of the recent Arab uprisings.
