Rafsanjani accused of interfering with Ahmadinejad government

President Ahmadinejad’s legal adviser says Ayatollah Rafsanjani, chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council, is “the lead manager of the moves against the government.”
Gholamhossein Elham said that the Expediency Council has invaded the arena of the executive branch and is trying to “limit or completely overstep” the authority of the government. He added that the Council will soon step over the authority of the Guardian Council and even the Supreme Leader.
“What guarantee do we have that in this manner we will not suddenly come face to face with a new constitution and a new regime?” Elham said.
The parliament has been trying to limit the authority of the president in the election of the head of the Central Bank by stating that the appointment initiated by the president must also be approved by the majority of the parliament. The parliament bill was rejected by the Guardian Council after which the MPs appealed to the Expediency Council to approve the new legislation.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad issued a letter to the Members of Parliament criticizing the interference of Rafsanjani in the affairs of the executive branch of the government, and accusing Ali Larijani, speaker of the parliament, and Sadegh Larijani, head of the judiciary, of supporting Ayatollah Rafsanjani in these efforts.
According to Iranian constitution, a bill approved by parliament will have to receive the approval seal of the Guardian Council. If the Guardian Council turns a bill down, and the MPs still wish to approve the bill, they can appeal to the authority of the Expediency Council to make it an official legislation.
The members of the Expediency Council are appointed by the Supreme Leader for a five-year term. The current Council’s mandate will end in the coming Iranian year.
