Iranian opposition leaders cancel June 12 march
11 Jun 2010
Iranian opposition leaders say they have been informed that “forces of extremism and oppression” have devised a scheme to “attack defenceless people”; therefore, June12 demonstrations are cancelled. In an announcement published on Mehdi Karroubi’s Saham News website, Mousavi and Karroubi draw attention to the “dark background” of the Iranian government in “oppressing protesters” in the past year and they urge people to pursue their demands through “more effective and less costly” methods.
The opposition leaders also warn the government that they should not presume that they have managed to “repress” protesters with “their intimidation, humiliation and lies.” They added that the movement is still alive and despite all the “threats and hazards” they have not given up on their protests.
The disputing candidates of the 2009 presidential elections remark that “the smallest hint of a gathering” from protesters is enough to “throw the oppressors into absolute fear” and results in strict police and security measures.
Mousavi and Karroubi had applied for a permit to hold a silent and peaceful demonstration on the anniversary of the elections which led to massive street protests with people demanding to have their vote back. The opposition leaders and reformist groups have been asking for permission to hold a peaceful demonstration on June 12 which they claim is a legal demand according to Article 27 of the Islamic Republic Constitution. The Ministry of Interior has reportedly every effort and excuse to avoid responding to their application.
