New sanctions against Iran approved by UN Security Council

10 Jun 2010

New sanctions against Iran were approved yesterday by the UN Security Council targeting Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, ballistic missiles and nuclear-related investments. The fourth round of sanctions were approved by a vote of 12-2 with Brazil and Turkey voting against them and Lebanon abstaining. President Barack Obama and US Foreign Minister Hillary Clinton both have said that the resolution imposes the “toughest sanctions ever faced by the Iranian government.”
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is in Dushanbe on a visit to Tajikistan, said: “These resolutions are worthless to our nation They are like used tissues that must be thrown into the garbage.” The new resolution was prepared during months of difficult negotiations between the permanent council members who have veto powers and non-member Germany and contrary to earlier proposals, the resolution includes no restrictions regarding the sale of Iranian oil.
The UN Security Council approved another resolution to impose sanctions against Iran last year. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has announced that passing another resolution against Iran will mark the end of any further negotiations about its nuclear activities. Barack Obama has said however that despite the new sanctions they are still prepared to resume talks with Iran if the Islamic Republic decides to submit to their demands.
