France to expel killer of Iran’s former prime minister

18 May 2010

France decided yesterday to expel an Iranian who is serving a life sentence for the 1991 murder of Iran’s last prime minister under the Shah, paving the way for his return to Tehran. Ali Vakili Rad was convicted in 1994 of stabbing Shapour Bakhtiar to death in the former premier’s Paris flat, and became eligible for parole last year. The French interior minister, Brice Hortefeux, said he had signed the expulsion decree.
“Justice has ruled in favour of his parole after years and years and years in prison,” Hortefeux said. “The expulsion decree is just the administrative result. It’s been signed.” A court is expected to formally announce the ruling on Tuesday.
The decision to expel Vakili Rad comes the day after a French teaching assistant, Clotilde Reiss, returned home to Paris after being detained for 10 months in Tehran on spying charges. France has denied cutting a deal with Iran to secure her release. The Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in September that France should consider a prisoner swap if it wanted to see 24-year-old Reiss freed. Two weeks ago France freed an Iranian engineer Washington wanted to extradite on charges of illegally buying electronic equipment from U.S. firms for military use.
Vakili Rad was one of three people suspected of supporting the Islamic Revolution who assaulted Bakhtiar, whose secretary also died in the attack. The other two assailants escaped. Vakili Rad was arrested in Switzerland and extradited. Bakhtiar was an opponent of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi but was made prime minister in a last attempt to save his monarchy. Bakhtiar resigned after five weeks, and fled the country after the 1979 Iranian revolution, living in exile in Paris until his murder.
