Karroubi: “Islamic Republic’s life is off its main course”

18 May 2010

Saham News website reports that opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi claims that the Islamic Republic’s existence depends on the direct and indirect vote of the people and their supervision over the state. During a meeting with Iranians from various backgrounds, including teachers, doctors and nurses, Karroubi expressed regret over the judiciary’s post-election conduct and said that “unfortunately our [Islamic] system has come to a point where irresponsible individuals without any care for their own fate are handing down verdicts of Moharebeh,” or enmity against God, which is punishable by death. Karroubi also told those present that the people’s votes and opinions were not respected in the Islamic Republic. “When the election results are known and they are congratulating each other in the morning of the election, it most certainly isn’t a sign of respect for the people’s votes or a belief in it. The Islamic Republic’s life and meaning is determined by its people. Yet some in the country seek to eliminate the system’s republic aspect and the role of the nation so that they can stay in power. Unfortunately we are witnessing the Islamic Republic’s derailment from its main course.”
Karroubi also criticised recent remarks by Guardians Council member Gholamhossein Elham who called Mir-Hossein Mousavi and his wife Zahra Rahnavard “Mohareb”. He described the remarks as “shocking” and “irresponsible,” while recalling an incident in 1997 when even the current Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei himself had words of praise for Mousavi who had been the prime minister of Iran during Imam Khomeini’s leadership. “We’re saying that the regime must return to its main path. Fair and free elections must be held. Independent press must be shaped and they must have freedom of speech. Parties and factions must have a right to be active, trade unions and difference sectors of the people must be recognised and their rights respected, and the constitution must be fully implemented.”
When asked about the recent restrictions and limitations against himself and the Green Movement, Karroubi said that the people were wise and would stand firm in the face of the present dangers. He also stressed the need to take advantage of the opportunities available on the Internet at a time when there are so many constraints faced by the opposition.
