Khatami: “Oppression will not work”

20 Apr 2010

“Perceived stability” achieved through intimidation and oppression by self-serving governments can never be lasting. Former Iranian president and opposition leader Mohammad Khatami expressed this opinion in the text of his speech for the 28th general meeting of InterAction Council on nuclear disarmament in Japan. While he was prohibited from attending the meeting due to a travel ban, he published the complete text of his speech on Parleman News on Sunday.
In his speech, he makes a proposal for an “alliance of peace” with the backing of the InterAction Council and establishes that the Foundation for Dialogue amongst Civilizations can prepare a charter for the peace coalition that can be then delivered to “the United Nations and other influential organizations in order to be given enforcement mechanisms.”
Khatami writes: “Peace needs peace-loving spirits and more than ever before we need our rulers to be endowed with this virtue. Peace is a fruit which will only grow on the tree of justice. And until justice—whether on the national arena and in the treatment of governments of its own people or on the international arena—is absent we cannot expect real peace to take hold.”
While Mohammad Khatami was prohibited from travelling abroad, so far no Iranian government body has taken responsibility for issuing this travel ban. The Minority Faction of Iran’s parliament has voiced its opposition against this travel ban and announced that they will follow up on the matter through the judiciary.
Former presidents of Sweden and Canada, Ingvar Karlsson and Jean Chretien, two of Khatami’s peers from the InterAction Council, also criticized Khatami’s travel restrictions in a letter to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
