Khatami prevented from leaving Iran

16 Apr 2010

Parleman News, the official website of the minority faction of the Iranian parliament, reported yesterday that former President Mohammad Khatami was prevented from leaving Iran for Japan to attend a summit on nuclear disarmament.
According to Parleman News, some pro-government media outlets had accused Khatami of wanting to leave Iran permanently. Parleman News claims that such tactics employed by Khatami’s enemies potentially played a role in his travel ban.
In Iranian law, there has to be a judicial order to restrict one’s ability to leave the country. No legal orders are issued by Iran’s judiciary banning Khatami from leaving the country.
Mohammad Khatami, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi are constantly referred to by the pro-government media as the “leaders of (the) sedition.” Supporters of President Ahmadinejad and followers of Supreme Leader Khamenei have expressed their anger and dislike of the reformist trio. There have been many calls for the arrest and prosecution of the main leaders of the Green Movement by the hardliners.
In another surprising headline involving the former president, Parleman News reported yesterday that Khatami’s office issued a statement denying a meeting that allegedly took place with Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, the chairman of the Assembly of Experts.
Pro-government newspapers reported yesterday that Khatami and Rafsanjani criticized Mousavi and Karroubi in a private meeting that allegedly took place last week. Khatami’s office announced that no such meeting between the two former presidents took place.
The government seems to be increasing the pressure on the leaders of the Green Movement and is trying to prevent them from getting more international exposure. Iranian hardliners have demanded Khatami, Mousavi and Karroubi to be put on trial for instigating riots against the Islamic Republic.
